The National Geospatial Program provides leadership for USGS geospatial coordination, production and service activities. The Program engages partners to develop standards and produce consistent and accurate data through its Geospatial Liaison Network. Operational support is provided by the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC). These and other Program activities that are essential to the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) are managed as a unified portfolio that benefits geospatial information users throughout the Nation. The NGTOC provides essential support for the USGS and the Nation in the acquisition and management of trusted geospatial data, products, and services, through world-class geospatial technical expertise and customer service. The NGTOC supports The National Map (TNM) and The National Hydrology Dataset (NHD) among other related efforts.

Job Description:

We are looking for a qualified individual to provide LiDAR software development support as a Computer Programmer III on contract to NGTOC.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Deliverables):

  • Prepare, maintain, and provide documentation as required by the task for software development, interfaces, and job processes / procedures in the form of flow diagrams, data dictionaries, procedures, clarifications, status reports, user guides, and other written directives and documents.
  • Disseminate, coordinate, and track development tasks among a team of programmers
  • Provide material or presentations regarding the background and use of applications, services, tools, and systems.
  • Provide and articulate status, risks, blockers, and pending activities through routine scrum activities including scrum meetings, sprint planning meetings, and sprint review meetings
  • Create and communicate clear, concise, accurate, and effective documentation of computer programs, interfaces, and job processes and procedures for others to use and reference.
  • Develop new and updated GIS services, applications, and other functional components related to activities development as well as associated documentation.
  • Write monthly progress and status reports
  • Implement new GIS technologies (ESRI and OSS)
  • Engage and collaborate in developing technical solutions to meet requirements outlined in the annual plans
  • Publish research results
  • Conduct oral presentations
  • Provide source code versioned in the designated (GIT) Repository
  • To learn and follow Standard Operating Procedures.
  • To work well (collaboratively, professionally and responsibly) in a small team environment.

Supervisory/Management Authority:

This position does not have management authority or supervisory capacity.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/Information Systems and 1 year of experience or equivalent years of experience
  • Knowledge of dealing with very large datasets
  • Experience meeting deadlines and managing tasks and timelines to meet them.

  • Ability to successfully pass a drug screen and background investigation

 

 

 

Preferred:

  • Experience or familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, software, data types, formats and structures.
  • Understanding of LiDAR data and its processing, quality control, and its derivative product(s) delivery.
  • A candidate who is interested in dedicating themselves to learning from other team members in a casual team environment with generous work-life balance opportunities.

Work Environment:

This work will be performed in a climate-controlled office environment.

Significant work-life balance opportunities are available. Casual attire, flexible schedules, in a casual work environment of typical office setting is the primary place of duty; however, some allowance for telework may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Considerable work in front of computer screens and utilizing keyboard and mouse / trackball is required. As a contractor on government site, there is the ability to bring in a personally-owned sit/stand desk, if desired. Small teams of <5 individuals.
