We are seeking a Data Analyst III to join a QC laboratory team supporting programs within the Influenza Division of the CDC National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The team supports the production and distribution of FDA-cleared and Research Use Only in-vitro diagnostic products developed by the CDC that detect and characterize various influenza virus. 

The selected candidate will work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Roybal Campus located in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.

We are seeking a Data Analyst III to provide full-time support to CDC’s Influenza Division in relation to carrying out its mission and goals.


Data Analyst III performs laboratory surveillance analysis of seasonal influenza viruses form serological data generated from serological assays and animal model research.



Includes the following:

  • Perform laboratory surveillance analysis of seasonal influenza viruses from surveillance, genetic and antigenic data generated. Provide results of analyses of these data for decisions by CDC in selecting influenza strains for seasonal influenza vaccine production.
  • Serves as data manager for influenza virus reference team (VRT), maintains databases (MS Access, SQL), maintains and updates user interface and queries for reports and analyses.
  • Ensure integrity and accuracy of data that is stored in the databases and connected to other data sources.
  • Develops, plans, coordinates, and implements analytical programs to manage and interpret laboratory data, using a variety of specialized programs (e.g. GraphPad Prizm, JASPR, R, Tableau etc.).
  • Improve the content and utility of databases and user-interface(s) to create lab-related workflows and reports.
  • Improve data integration across multiple data sources leveraging Hadoop.
  • Provides the data analysis in the twice-yearly seasonal influenza vaccine strain selection studies for WHO vaccine strain selection meetings and international sender summary reports.
  • To serve as liaison with CDC/NCIRD/ID Laboratory Management Systems (LIMS) team to provide the best interface for database connections and integration of relational databases
  • Perform laboratory data analysis using a variety of specialized programs (e.g. GraphPad Prizm, JASPR, etc.).
  • Perform statistical analysis of data.
  • Support scientific studies by conducting statistical analysis of research data and preparing prepares technical reports, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.



No supervisory or management authority.



Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with at least one (1) years of laboratory experience in biology or microbiology and four (4) years of data management experience.



  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of public health research and evaluation to analyze, evaluate and provide expert advice and consultation.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, applications, and state-of-the-art technology in the position's scientific area of responsibility to provide direction and guidance on critical and complex issues.
  • Candidate should have experience in LIMs.
  • Candidate must possess significant database management skills (in SQL, Access, and Excel). Preferably, they should be fluent in all versions of MS Access and proficient in SQL programming. Statistical skills are also desirable.
  • Preference will be given to individuals with demonstrated experience in creating and customizing public health databases and experience in coordinating reports between their own group/team and external partners.
  • Ability to perform complex analytical studies and interpretation of results to coordinate the evaluation of programs and recommend improvements.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to make clear, convincing presentations, explain and justify recommendations, represent the agency and assigned program or project areas, provide guidance and advise program administrators and members of the community, respond to inquiries, and interact with high level officials and representatives from public and private public health organizations.



Work will be performed in a climate-controlled office and laboratory environment.
