The Microbiologist I will provide support to the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), Viral Gastroenteritis Branch (VGB) within the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The position will perform research and computer based analysis to increase understanding of different types of viruses.


Includes the following:

  • Growth and purification, diagnostics, biochemical and molecular characterization of rotaviruses or noroviruses, and rotavirus or norovirus vaccine research and development.
  • Produce and characterize monoclonal antibodies.
  • Develop new reagents and methods to detect and characterize rotaviruses, noroviruses and other agents of viral gastroenteritis.
  • Investigate the risk factors and mechanisms for lower effectiveness of rotavirus or norovirus vaccine in the developing world.
  • Perform independent laboratory research, which will result in the evaluation of the viral components of multi- enteric pathogen platforms.
  • Perform characterization of testing of the developed assay using reference rotavirus or norovirus laboratory strains and a multi-agent cross-reactivity panel.
  • Establish analytical performance characteristics of the assay using a panel of positive and negative stool samples.
  • Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts describing the work performed and data generated.
  • Present research and development data and findings to CDC staff and the scientific community.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.


No supervisory/management authority.


Bachelors of Science degree plus at least 2 years of relevant experience. Previous experience working in a similar role.


  • Willingness to travel: as required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
  • Knowledge of CDC laboratory policy, quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality systems and general microbiology/biology.
  • Knowledge of basic computer and inventory software functions.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of documentation for equipment calibration and validation.
  • Must be United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States.
  • Must have current Hepatitis B vaccination (and Hepatitis A vaccination is highly encouraged).



Work will be performed primarily in a climate-controlled office and laboratory environment.
